We left our Richmond camp late in
the morning, the overnight rain having eased to intermittent showers. We parked
up in Nelson, and then went to the movies after lunch; “Woman in Gold” starring
Helen Mirren retelling the true tale of repatriation of art works by Klint
seized illegally by the Nazis, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. On emerging
into much better weather, we set off north toward the Picton, the ferry today
booked for tomorrow.
We had tagged a couple of camp spots through the Rai Valley; one did not
suit for the gravel road and the other already busy with better organised
travellers. We came on to the hotel here at Canvastown and asked if we might
park up in their car park. The charge? Free if you buy a beer, otherwise …? We
purchased a couple of glasses of wine which added to a substantial camping
tariff so had no qualms about spending the night here behind the hotel.
Chris is no better or worse night than the last few days, although he
actually sounds more choked up. Although we have spent time mingling with those
in supermarkets and cinemas, we are averse to meeting up with friend and
family, those we know personally. We would feel so guilty if we were to pass on
some “foreign” lurgy. Better to catch up with them when we return later in the
year.
