The weather
stayed fine albeit a little cold, but probably all the more pleasant for all my
grand nieces and nephews who played happily for an hour and a half, running as
wild as my own generation, unhampered by cotton wool but still quick and natural
with good manners, all a rarity these days. Chris and I arrived at the appointed
playground as arranged, and soon Jamie and Jessie arrived with their children,
most of who had not yet been born when we last got together. We sat on the park
benches with an eye on their wonderful tribe and chatted about this and that
for the duration until midday hunger started to cause unrest and it was time to
say goodbye. It had been an excellent reunion and both Chris and I agreed that
the children were indeed a credit to their parents.
Chris was
keen to window shop at a motorhome yard or two so we set off for one we had
called into some years ago on Ferry Road, in theory directly south of our
morning rendez-vous however we soon found roads closed and diversions in place,
all due to quake damage. We were surprised to find that even some reserves were
still closed to the public; these areas around Avonside and beyond had all been
severely affected by the quakes of four years ago.
We spent
some time at the first yard on our list and could have been talked into a trade
if the boss had not been on holiday, but escaped for a second, distracted by a
hire yard selling off their top end ex-rentals. If we were in the head space we
were twelve years or so ago before we ventured into the motorhome owning world,
I would be sitting here this evening in this chestnut orchard in a very
different motorhome, but this old faithful has served us well and may well for
many more years; any new van has a lot to live up to aside from being shiny and
new(er). Still we still have another
three or four addresses on our list so watch this space.
